The emblems are circular, with Latin motto around the perimeter and explanatory Latin couplet (occasionally four lines) engraved beneath. A few mottos and couplets are in French, Greek or Italian

Binding: red morocco, signed at foot of inside front cover: F. Bedford (Francis Bedford, 1799-1883). Boards tooled in gilt & black with double frames, fleurons at corners of the inner. Spine tooled in gilt, including author, title & imprint. Edges of boards and turn-ins tooled with gilt fillets, page edges gilt
Centered on front pastedown is gilt-tooled red morocco bookplate of the Huth library. John Landwehr's label at lower left corner
